Beacon Hill Fort & The Defences of Harwich; 1543-1956

Author: Peter Appleton

This guide book has been produced to document the history of Beacon Hill Fort/Battery. The last in a long line of front line defences built to protect the port of Harwich, Beacon Hill is a rare survivor. The fort/battery has been in use from 1893, and was updated in 1901, 1904, WWI and WWII.

The guide book includes a look at the towns history along with a detailed ‘tour’ of the site. It also outlines anti-aircraft defence, range finding and protection from landward attack.

An independent review by a member of the Palmerston Fort Society concluded that “the publication is praised as informative and highly recommended for visitors”.
